Impulse Buying Activity
In this lesson students use Social Networking tools to perform collaborative research on impulse buying, share their personal experiences with impulse buying, and come up with solutions to issues of impulse buying. The lesson is broken into three parts.
Part I.
A. Students will need to create a Diigo.com account.
B. They will then be instructed to join the Impulse Buying Research Group: http://groups.diigo.com/group/impulse-buying-research
C. The students will be directed to the impulse purchase Wikipedia page through a link on the Diigo.com group page. They will read this article for an overview of impulse buying.
D. Students are then required to perform their own internet research on impulse buying and post links to the information they find on the group page. If another student already posted a link they planned to share the students should “Like” the other student’s link.
E. Each student will post a brief summary of what they learned during their research. Students are required to respond to the summaries posted by at least two classmates.
Part II.
A. Students will need to create a Flickr.com account. Or if they have Yahoo account already they can log in with that.
B. Students will join the Impulse Buying Activity Group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2148501@N22/
C. The students will be directed to post a picture of an impulse purchase they themselves have made. Alternatively they may post a picture of a friend or family member’s impulse purchase.
D. Each student will post a comment on their own uploaded photo explaining the item is and when/where the purchase was made and what factors made it an impulse purchase.
E. The students will review the photos posted by their classmates and comment on the photos of at least two classmates.
Part III.
A. Students will create a Facebook account or log into their existing Facebook account.
B. Once logged into Facebook they will join the Impulse Buying Prevention Page:
http://www.facebook.com/ImpulseBuyingPrevention
C. Students will make a post on the page wall sharing a personal impulse buying experience and whether it ended up being a good or bad decision.
D. The instructor will respond to each students post offering feedback pertaining to the students personal experience and what they would have suggested in that situation.
E. Each student must then respond to the instructor with their plans for preventing future bad impulse purchasing decisions.
Students will continue to have access to the Facebook page as a self-help/reference whenever they find themselves out shopping and considering a possible potential purchase.
